Drawing with Light during Earth Hour

By |2024-07-30T17:43:35+00:00March 5th, 2020|

Drawing with light during Earth Hour created a photographic artwork solely in the glow of solar light emitted by Consol Solar Jars. The backdrop was beautiful, set at Nizamiya Turkish Masjid (Turkish Mosque) in Midrand, near Johannesburg. Professional photographer, Peter Hassall, magically captured the word, Earth Hour, in solar light.

The word photograph derives from Greek:
phos = light
graphê = draw or write
phos + graphê = drawing with light = photograph

Nine people lined up in the camera frame. Each wrote a letter spelling Earth Hour backwards with a Consol Solar Jar in their hand so that it appeared right reading and pointed directly at the camera. The exposure was 15 seconds and they had to move the Consol Solar Jar in as wide an area as possible. If you look behind each letter, you will see the ghosted figure of a person holding their Consol Solar Jar.

With all the interior lights switched off during Earth Hour, 12 Consol Solar Jars were placed upside down to shine up and light the archways, balancing the interior exposure with the exterior lighting of the clouds and turrets. The contact sheet shows four images:

Top left: all interior lights turned off.
Top right: six jars turned on to light right-hand side.
Bottom left: additional six jars turned on to light left-hand side.
Bottom right: final pic.

Suntoy promises to give our planet a brighter future, the eco-friendly way, by making every hour a solar-power-hour.

Infographic Poster

Sierra Salvione studied Graphic Design at Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago (Ai Chicago) and graduated in June of 2012. An assignment in her sustainable design class lead Sierra to research innovative eco-friendly products and she discovered the Consol Solar Jar while surfing the net. We emailed Sierra to find out more about her infographic poster showcasing our Consol Solar Jar.

“I chose the Consol Solar Jar because it’s practical and beautiful. The first thing that I remember coming across was the numerous design awards it had received in 2011. Once I saw the photos of the jar at work, I immediately started thinking of how many I would like in my backyard someday. I have a strong love for anything that lights up the night. These jars are a beautiful hybrid of vintage design meets modern technology. When designing the poster, I went with a vintage aesthetic and a technology infused layout. I feel absolutely honored to be featured on the Suntoy blog! I am thrilled that my poster design caught your attention in South Africa and that it led to this blog post. I am very grateful for this opportunity!”

Sunny congratulations for a design well done, Sierra!

Earth Hour Challenge

By |2024-07-30T17:43:36+00:00January 14th, 2020|

Light your way to Earth Hour with our Consol Solar Jars. Turn one hour into every hour for the good of our planet and join Suntoy in using eco-friendly solar lighting.

South Africans join global communities in turning off non-essential lights to raise awareness of the need to take action on climate change. We’re making a collective difference to our environment.

Choosing to read your book by solar light is a small action in changing your lifestyle while lowering your carbon footprint. Every kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity you avoid, saves over a kilogram of harmful carbon dioxide that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. Using renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaic (solar) cells, in our daily lives drops our carbon emissions. Reason enough to

Fireflies

A firefly’s bioluminescence makes for nights of glowing outdoor adventures. Referring to these remarkable tiny creatures while describing our Consol Solar Jars gave us sunny smiles. “They have a ‘firefly-in-a-jar’ look and feel,” wrote Louise Hardy from New Zealand.

Her mom, who lives in South Africa, visited Louise in New Zealand and gifted her Consol Solar Jars for her birthday. “My three solar jars hang from our newly constructed pergola in our home garden. I love outdoor lights and these are fantastic and solar powered. I enjoy my nightly ritual of turning each on and seeing them from inside and out. All our friends think they are brilliant and ask where they can be purchased. I am very proud of mine!”

Our Consol Solar Jars are reaching far and wide… just like fireflies!

Message in a Bottle

In this age of quick texts and impersonal emails, make your 140 characters a handwritten note on recycled paper. A personal message makes for a cherished gift. Discovering a message in a glass bottle has been around for centuries and can be even more exciting if it’s a glass preserve jar with a solar light in the lid. There is no need to send the Consol Solar Jar floating across the ocean to bring delight to the receiver. Gifting ‘green’ results in a lower environmental impact and the Consol Solar Jar is an eco-friendly gift suitable for any celebration. Don’t let affection go unspoken… put a message in a bottle. It’s a Theatre in a Jar.

200,000th Consol Solar Jar!

By |2024-07-30T17:43:36+00:00January 14th, 2020|

Serial number 200,000 in a Consol Solar Jar lid rolled off the factory floor! Here’s a special blog post authored by Mr Sunshine, aka Harald Schulz, our intrepid Technical and Managing Director. Celebrate this important milestone with us.

Hello Team Suntoy and all our valued customers. A total of 30 people at Suntoy are directly involved in the manufacture of the Consol Solar Jar (CSJ). Big thanks and well done to all of you on producing 200,000. To Consol Glass, thank you for giving us this opportunity. Time to reflect and entertain with interesting statistics.

Units Produced:
The first CSJ rolled off the line on 21 September, 2011. That month we made 804 units. The quantity then steadily increased to 6,157 per month by May 2012, one year ago. This month we expect to ship a total of 27,000 units.

Interesting Facts on Weight:
1,000 rolls of 5kg or 5 tons of steel wire have been used. That’s a total of 165km of wire in total! We have produced and shipped a total weight of over 150 tons of product.

Light and Energy Output:
If Soccer City filled to capacity – that’s 94,736 people in total – and each person held two Consol Solar Jars, 10,000 jars would illuminate the field. These CSJs would produce 24kW of renewable power, approximately equivalent to the light output of 3,000 standard Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) light bulbs.

For Propeller Heads:
The energy held in batteries and recharged every day by the sun is theoretically 288kWh. The average South African uses 4.5kWh per day. Purely mathematically, the 200,000 CSJs we’ve produced could supply 64 South Africans with their complete electricity demand. In terms of energy production, 200,000 CSJs would comfortably be able to power 24 households.

By comparison Ethiopia ranks amongst the lowest electricity users in the world per capita. In Ethiopia the average person uses 0.12kwh of electricity per day. Our 200,000 CSJs produced could therefore supply 2,400 Ethiopians with electric power.

Congratulations Team Suntoy!

Colour Filters and Solar Panels

By |2024-07-30T17:43:36+00:00January 14th, 2020|

Fourteen-year-old Katie Fitzgerald was introduced to the Consol Solar Jar (CSJ) by her dad. The solar powered light instantly intrigued her. At school, Katie was learning about the relationship between light, colour and the visible spectrum. She began to explore ideas for incorporating the CSJ into her project submission for the Grade 7 Science Expo Competition. Katie discovered what effect colour filters have on solar light.

Katie placed sheets of coloured cellophane – red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet – over the solar panels that are embedded in the lids of Consol Solar Jars. The cellophane acted as a colour filter. She placed the CSJs in the sun to charge for two hours. Katie then measured the burning time (in hours) of each light.

Results showed that different coloured filters had different effects on the burning time of a solar powered light. This is an interesting observation. Suntoy congratulates Katie on her findings. Check out Katie’s school project, The Effect of Colour Filters on Solar Panels, and download her presentation: The Effect of Colour Filters on Solar Panels.

Branded Corporate Gifts

By |2024-07-30T17:44:01+00:00January 14th, 2020|

For any business, recognition is of importance in thanking staff, suppliers and customers. Here’s a wow-worthy idea that does just that.

Imprinting your corporate logo on our Consol Solar Jar creates a branded gift that’s both functional and eco-friendly. It’s an innovative choice portraying thought and care for a green economy while supporting a locally manufactured South African product. There’s no better way to show commitment to the environment than by the gifts you choose to give.

Suntoy can sandblast your company logo onto the glass jar. We prefer to receive a vector file (.eps or .ai) or a high-resolution jpeg. Our art department assists with artwork. Orders are accepted in quantities per carton, each carton containing 12 Consol Solar Jars.

Shining on Amazon in Europe

By |2024-07-30T17:44:01+00:00January 14th, 2020|

The Consol Solar Jar is now offered for purchase on amazon in Germany amazon.de, United Kingdom amazon.co.uk and France amazon.fr. Harald Schulz evaluates its impact:

The Consol Solar Jar is known as the Sonnenglas in Germany and is shining on European markets. The important thing to note on the amazon.de page is the customer reviews. It has the most customer reviews – or should we say customer applause – than any competitor product. Currently, out of 74 reviews, 72 give it five stars.

The recurring themes in the customer reviews are (translated from German):

Easy to use/operate
Light not too bright, not too dim, romantic/beautiful
Practical, versatile, good runtime, good quality, waterproof
Easy to decorate (seasons, weddings, birthdays etc), decorative object
Great gift
Never fails to delight, best idea in a long time
Used indoors/outdoors
More expensive than others though money well spent
“Made in South Africa!”
The only two non-five star reviews were:

A German tourist who experienced the jar in Namibia (at Namib Desert Lodge) but battled to find it in Germany and eventually bought one on amazon via Sonnenglas. He gave it four stars and was awaiting delivery.

One consumer complained that no automatic on/off or day/night switch was integrated.

“We could not wish for better! On behalf of the Suntoy team, thanks to all involved. You make us proud!” – Harald Schulz, Suntoy Technical and Managing Director, Johannesburg.

Proudly South African

By |2024-07-30T17:44:02+00:00January 14th, 2020|

Melkterts, koeksisters and Consol Solar Jars were the highlights of a get-together in Jozi recently. A group of friends gathered for an authentically South African eve of culinary delights. With a power outage that left their home in darkness, the hosts were rescued by a dozen Consol Solar Jars scattered amongst the yummy eats.

All the guests raved about the solar light source along with the warm atmosphere it created – despite having no electricity. Everyone wanted a Consol Solar Jar of their own!

Whether your preference is a braai of steak and pap or a dish of mogodu, with a little imagination any party planner can bring solar light to dinner. A versatile theatre in a jar is sure to inspire fresh ideas for table decor. The Consol Solar Jar is made in South Africa and we’re truely proud of that.
